How to Decorate with Bud Vases
Bud vases are, please pardon the pun, a centerpiece of floral arranging. The simple containers have probably been in existence since the advent of the floral arrangement or even earlier. Their versatility and simplicity make them the perfect addition to any and every home décor imaginable. Understanding how to use bud vases correctly can add energy and vitality to your home.
First and foremost, what exactly is a bud vase? A bud vase, by definition, has a long, narrow neck that flares into a broad, rounded base. The neck is so narrow that only a single stem should be able to pass through it, but, in actuality, designers experiment with the form. Bud vases can come in a variety of shapes and sizes; some are short and fat, others are all tall and skinny, and the degree of flare from the neck to the base varies. Bud vases are also made of a variety of materials, including glass, metal, porcelain, ceramic, pottery, stone, and wood. Despite their basic shared form, a petite clear glass bud vase looks very different from a three-foot tall glazed ceramic bud vase and creates a very different impression. Bud vases are like bowls or cups; despite their shared form, variety within the category makes them incredibly diverse. There are also bud vases with multiple stems, but there is less versatility within this form.
An empty bud vase is infinitely less charming than one bearing a fresh cut flower but floral arranging can be tricky. The style of your home, the bud vase, and the flower itself must blend perfectly. For example, a petite crystal bud vase holding a tall orchid in the living room of an American Country style home will look very odd and out of place. Consider style first. Is your home elegant or casual, traditional or contemporary? Use your judgment to decide if the bud vase you choose will fit your décor. Sterling silver and porcelain create a very different impression than wood and stone. Next, choose the flower to fit the décor and the container. If you have your heart set on an exotic orchid to add energy to your modern contemporary home, then your short crystal vase probably won't work. Find a tall frosted glass, metal, or pottery vase instead. The size and style of the flower must correspond with the size and style of the vase.
Finally, where should you display your bud vase in your home? Tables are a perfect spot. One vase placed in the center of a small table adds charm, while multiple bud vases on a large table add elegance. Wherever you decide to place your perfectly designed floral arrangement, your home is sure to benefit.
