Tall Glass Vases

From Tall Glass Vases to Tea Kettles: Choosing the Perfect Container for your Floral Arrangements

Well-designed floral arrangements can add vitality and style to any home décor, but poorly designed arrangements can appear out-of-place or amateurish. Bundles of heather in tall glass vases or elegant orchids in tiny tea kettles won't add to the appeal of your home. Learning a few simple design techniques can help you choose the perfect container for the most beautiful flowers.

First, choose the flowers that you would like to display carefully. Match the color and design of the flowers to the style of your home. Exotic flowers look wonderful in modern, contemporary homes, but may appear out of place in an American Country style home. Also match the style of the flower to the style of the vases. A mixture of spring flowers, such as yarrow or heather, will look best in a simple basket or clear glass vase, while a bundle of fragrant, pastel roses will appear prettier in an elegant silver vase or a gleaming crystal vase. If your flowers are dramatic, the vase you choose to hold them should be understated, while attention-grabbing decorative vases look best with simple flowers.

Next, choose the size of the vase or container carefully. A tall vase looks terrible filled with short flowers while tall flowers look odd in shallow containers. Just as bad as flowers that are too short or too thin for the containers they are in are flowers that pack their vases too tightly or too loosely. You can use curly willow in clear glass or globe shaped vases as a filler to take up space so that you can use fewer flowers. Don't use too few flowers, however; sickly-looking, half-empty vases look worse than overburdened vases. Not using enough flowers is also a common mistake made by amateurs. You can also be creative with the materials you use to fill your container. Move beyond shiny marbles and polished pebbles and explore natural materials like cherry tomatoes, grapes, or nuts in the shell to act as anchors for your flowers.

Finally, choose the material of the vases carefully. The variety of vases to choose from can be overwhelming. There are tall glass vases and short glass vases, clear glass vases and colored glass vases, porcelain vases and metallic vases, and vases made of pottery or ceramic. There are also vases which aren't really vases at all, such as woven baskets, tea kettles, rusty tin cans, and watering cans. Use your creativity and your familiarity with the style of your home to help you design the perfect floral arrangements.
